Next Operation Of Blue Hippo

According to the founder of Formula D, Adil, told me that my Blue Hippo only had 330whp and running lean during 4th gear, thus I'll decided to re-tune my Hippo's F Con V pro to solve the 4th gear problem and at the same time increase the horse power and torque because I can guarantee I'm the slowest GTR for sure!!!! I plan to make it at next week, hopefully everything go smooth.

In this case, I hope anyone who reading this post can give me some suggestion, I wonder how many Horse power and Torque is recommend to increase since I'm only used it for normal drive and maybe sometime semi-aggressive when midnight drive. By the way, I'm not 100% know what the previous owner had did(modification) to this car. As a freshly of GTR, I only know few things must be done before think of upgrade the car's HP, like change the fuel rail, injector, intake system, exhaust system, fuel regulator, clutch, brake and handling system, please correct me or notify me if I'm wrong, I'll be very appreciate for your information.

Not 100% but I still can list out few items that changed by previuos owner, I'm not to stated every single item brand's name here but just briefly go through what component has been changed to aftermarket item as below:
- Intake system(air filter, hose)
- Exhaust system(muffler)
- Fuel rail
- Fuel regulator
- Oil catch tank
- Intercooler & Inter's pipe
- Radiator
- Surge tank
- Engine & Radiator cap
- F-CON V ProEcu
- Pulley
- Dual plate clutch
- 6 pot Brake
- Ohlin Suspension

For engine and turbo, I can't really get to know whether he had changed or not. Anyway, for the 1st time of increase power, I not dare to increase too much because I worry I can't handle it. My mind told me that 400 to 450whp will be enough, is it OK?? And as above aftermarket items, can it withstand this horse power?? I don't want my car's parts end up with can't sustain this power and cause me to change everything at the time. Thus I need you guys suggestion, for those who feel uncomfortable to post here can send me via email or add me in FaceBook, address is mayderlon4889@hotmail.com

  1. Hi there,

I have been a reader for a while.

I don't owned a GTR34 but have a fair bit of experience on these beast. I'll run down the list as below

    - Intake system - Run Apexi/K&N. HKS is known for bad filtering

    - Exhaust system(muffler) - A nice HKS legamax system will give a noise note while keeping is "not" so loud

    - Fuel rail - HKS fuel fail + big injectors maybe 1000cc SARD one will do

    - Fuel regulator - Do you really need it?

    - Oil catch tank - Make sure there is no leak and have wire mesh inside the can for extra filtering

    - Intercooler & Inter's pipe - a front mount IC with stainless steel piping will be nice. I would usually go custom as it's cheaper and does the same job. Else, HKS system has a bolt on. Make sure when you order, state that you have GTR with RB26. The piping between GTR and GTT is slightly different

    - Radiator - Keep the stock ones unless it's leaking. Change it when it starts to leak

    - Surge tank - Not needed! You said daily drive

    - Engine & Radiator cap - 1.3Bar radiator cap will do. Engine oil cap? it's for the looks only

    - F-CON V ProEcu - I prefer Apexi FC Commander but IMO, get a tuner that is comfortable with the ecu. If tuner is not familiar with it, you are screwed. Remember independent ECU are not self learning. Every mod that changes the hp, intake, exhaust will need a retune. You better off getting everything done up first before a tune.

    - Pulley - Not really needed, it will allow the car to rev easier.

    - Dual plate clutch - Not recommended. Hard to drive, very heavy. Since you said it's daily, stuck it traffic will drive you legs numb. However, I would do it anyway, good clutch to hold the massive power

    - 6 pot Brake - Yes. Do it, some nice big brembo/project MU will be good. Do not save on brakes. Get the best/good ones. You have a large selection here; your call. Change with some good brake pads, steel braided lines, and also slotted rotor. Dimple is not very good IMO.

    - Ohlin Suspension - Again, your call. Ohlin are rather comfy compare to others. Teins are too highly rated IMO. Cusco Zeros are hard but really good on corners. Make sure you get a reputable coilover "tuner" to get the coils to it's optimum tune. 6kg Fronts 5.5kg Rears will be "just" nice IMO. Any heavier, it will turn the car really stiff and uncomfortable.

    Hope that helps.

Now: I do not own/have own any Skyline. I worked on it before and also sat in a few of them. All these mods I recommended were done on the cars I have sat/worked on. Feel free to leave a comment, I will reply :)

  2. Hi bro nicwan8, thank you very much for your reply in such a detail sentence, it really so informative to me. ^_^ By the way, all those components I stated is already changed to aftermarket by previous owner and some of the brand is just as you mention above. ^_^

I wish to know is it anything component that I miss out at above and need to change to aftermarket before I upgrade the horse power? Anyway, your reply really help me out, for example HKS air filter is not good enough compare to Apex and K&N. Too bad, my air filter is HKS now.... Will change it if have extra budget there.

Again, thank you so much for your reply, hopefully can get more reply and lesson from you.

  3. Hi Jeff,

    Hope my post helped you.

I don't think you are missing anything. Hard to tell especially when you don't get to see the beast :)

The RB26 engine can take much torture before breaking.

One question for you and only you can answer and be honest with yourself. Do you really need to much whp? This will never end.... IMO.

I'm a Malaysian living in Australia (Brisbane) and have seen many 700whp to even one 1000whp R34. The owners don't even drive it out, and most of the time the cars are on track and car shows. It's hard to drive, noisy and attract too much attention :P

IMO, 400-500whp is more than enough. You can't speed too much, and also endangering lives of people. Why not take some time to invest on carbon fiber bits or thinking outside the box. Lightening parts like flywheel, pulleys, bigger throttle body, or even spend time tuning suspension or more spirited drive. That's my 2 cents :)

  4. nicwan8, I think you are right and I have asked few people out there, they said HP is not so important but torque yes. As answer back to myself(honest), I not used as daily car, only once or twice per week at midnight with normal drive style and sometime semi aggrassive style(when totally no car on my way) because of the clutch....
